Quixote Cycles: Tailor fit, handmade steel bicycles

It is my quest to change your preferred mode of personal transportation by creating for you a tailor fit, beautiful, hand-crafted bicycle. With this, you may sally forth on your own quest and together we shall change the world.

About me

Bicycles have always been a part of my life. The photo below is me and one of my earlier rides. I think the socks were acquired specifically to match the red, white and blue handlebar tassles. In 1992 I rode my bike across North America from L.A. to Boston. That experience awakened a new perception of time and distance while highlighting the freedom and efficiency of the relatively simple machine I previously took for granted. If I can help contribute to such an awakening and empowerment of another soul, I will have accomplished a special feat. That is why I make bicycles.

My résumé is covered with bike advocacy and education, as well as grease, road grime and brazing flux. I taught kids bike repair in a community program called Handlebar Helpers. I volunteer monthly to maintain a fleet of bikes for local bicycle safety education classes. I served a full 6 year term on my local bike advisory committee. I volunteered at the repair collective, Right-to-Move and I worked on bikes as a professional mechanic for many years after vacating my VP gig at an Internet start-up. I raced mountain bikes, competed at Oregon Manifest, helped start a bicycle activist group, played a lot of polo, raced on ice in frigid temperatures, toured across the Southwest U.S., Europe and New Zealand, got arrested for speaking the truth at Critical Mass, learned to braze at United Bicycle Institute from Ron Sutphin and Mike DeSalvo (thanks guys), studied fitting from Ben Serotta and I currently work at BikePortland.org. All these experiences make me. And all these experiences go into the frame I make for you.

I started Quixote Cycles in 2004 as an artistic outlet that also challenges my left brain. I find the combination of design and precision particularly gratifying when the end result is an aesthetically pleasing yet functional, even transformative tool whose time has come again.

Call or email anytime to get started on yours. I could talk about bikes all day.
